Lanark

... was the first of nine novels written by Alasdair Gray, and the best known – something of a cult classic. According to Wikipedia, "it combines realist and dystopian surrealist depictions of his home city of Glasgow" and was described by The Grauniad as "one of the landmarks of 20th–century fiction."

Also according to Wikipedia, Alasdair Gray was described by Anthony Burgess as "the best Scottish novelist since Walter Scott." He died in 2019, aged 85.

For what it's worth, I have read Lanark and found it hugely entertaining.
